Every year, students in Aspen School District's Outdoor Education (ODE) program head into the backcountry for an experience that teaches teamwork, leadership, and confidence in ways no classroom can. At Ute Mountaineer, we've had the privilege of supporting this program for over 40 years — donating gear, volunteering our time, and offering special discounts to help students show up prepared.

The Right Fit Matters Most
A comfortable, properly fitting pack is essential once you're out in the backcountry — there's no swapping it out for something better once you're on the trail. When you're shopping for a pack, look for an adjustable torso, a supportive hip belt, and at least 55L of capacity so there's room for everything the program requires.
For students who are still growing or new to backpacking, we especially recommend the Rook (men's) and Renn (women's). Both are built for first-time backpackers and feature an adjustable torso that grows right along with young adventurers — so the pack you buy this year can still fit next year.
If you're looking for something that keeps things simple without sacrificing performance, the Kelty Asher is a standout. Its adjustable fit, comfortable suspension, and durable build make it an excellent value pick for Outdoor Ed.

Boots: The Other Half of the Equation
A great pack won't make up for the wrong footwear. The best boot is always the one that fits your foot — but for Outdoor Ed specifically, you'll want an above-the-ankle, Gore-Tex or waterproof boot to handle the terrain and conditions.
