Why Shop at Ute Mountaineer?
Great gear is only half the story. The other half is the people who pick it, test it, and know exactly which piece belongs in your pack. We are a team that's been family owned and rooted in this valley for nearly 50 years.
Here's what sets the experience apart.
THE GEAR
Hand-picked selection of gear designed for local adventures.
At Ute Mountaineer we don’t carry everything, we carry the right things. We don’t have warehouses full of gear and an infinite catalogue of products. We have a dedicated team of buyers who eat, sleep, and breathe the categories they buy for. Each item on our shelf was hand-picked by experts.
Our team attends demos and activations across the globe to test all of the latest in outdoor technology and gear then determine which pieces belong on our shelves. If it's in our store, someone on our team has used it, trusted it, and decided it belongs here.
But it doesn’t stop there! Our team regularly attends in-depth clinics on the products we carry taught by the people who made them, so when you walk in with a question, you're talking to someone who actually knows the answer. We also run programs that get our staff outside and into the gear themselves, because there is no better education than the trail.
THE PEOPLE
Behind the store and the gear are people who care about more than the sale. Our mission is simple: we serve our guests by understanding their needs and using our expertise to provide the highest quality equipment to heighten their experience in the outdoors.
We live and play in the Rocky Mountains, and we use the gear we sell every day, so when we make a recommendation, it comes from firsthand experience, not a sales target. Call us, email us, or stop in. Ask about gear, care instructions, or what the Aspen backcountry is doing this week. We guarantee an honest opinion and a prompt, personal reply.
Whether you're planning your first hike on Smuggler or your tenth attempt on a fourteener, gearing up for a family ski day or a multi-day backcountry mission, you'll get the same attention and respect at our counter. No adventure is too big or too small, and no question is a dumb one. We remember what it felt like to be new to this too — and we'd rather spend twenty extra minutes making sure you leave with the right gear than rush you out the door with the wrong pair of boots.
When you shop at Ute Mountaineer, you're not just buying a product, you're getting the expertise of a team that is as serious about the outdoors as you are.
NOT JUST LOCAL, BUT FAMILY-OWNED.
In a town where small businesses are a rarity, we are proud to have been family owned and operated for nearly 50 years. Founded by Bob Wade in 1977, the store today is run by his daughter Maile, who grew up exploring in the Roaring Fork Valley.
We are proud to be a locally owned and independent business and would like to encourage you to shop locally. Because shopping with local businesses helps your community in several ways including:
Helps employ your neighbors and quality members of your local community.
Your tax dollars help pay for community services such as the Aspen community Open Space and Trails, Roaring Fork Transportation Authority, and Pitkin County Social Services.
Recycles money throughout the local community. A larger percentage of dollars spent in local businesses stay in the local community and economy compared to national chain businesses.
Maintains your community as a destination by preventing a loss of service oriented businesses and employees.
